KRUCHIN . A HISTORY POETICS . RESTORATION WORK
When decided to publish his second book, focusing on his works on the restoration sphere, architect Samuel Kruchin, together with one of his office coordinators, Cristiane Gonçalves, and the C4 publishing company, faced the need to elect which of his works would be published, as well as their importance and the ways each of them should be presented to the public. Therefore, the office’s dead file should be accessed and searched thoroughly and all of the material judged as interesting to the publication in question should be selected and presented to the architect and other people further involved on the project.
It was for this aspect of the project that I was picked from the architects team to contribute, and had the pleasure of getting to know the previous yet not less important projects performed by the office throughout its functioning. Being in touch with the old sketches, watercolors, theory texts and project’s creation basis and intervention concepts, metric surveys and construction site’s registry photography, old project boards and digital files was a very enriching experience and allowed me to prepare the entirety of the visual material of the book during a couple of months of work and deepen my knowledge on the details involved on the publishing process.
The book’s description, available at the Kruchin Architecture office website, defines the published content:
“The book displays, on an bilingual edition of 360 illustrated pages, the works of the architect Samuel Kruchin on the scope of architecture restoration. Beginning with 5 essays in which the architect debates the main concepts of the restoration practice - Memory, Time, Intervention Unit, Register and Monument Expression, among others - also presenting the development of 26 projects and works fulfilled on the scope of architecture and urbanism conservation and of contemporary interventions to those environments, showing the work’s procedures and the concepts adopted on each case. Stand out, among the projects presented, monuments that go through the last four centuries of brazilian formation, from it’s rural aspect to the metropolitan constitution. The highlights are the Palácio da Justiça and the Palacete Conde de Sarzedas, Sítio do Capão (Home of Regente Feijó) and head office for the Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, Estação Ferroviária de Bananal, Cine Marabá, Fazenda Catitó, Fábrica Santa Helena, among others."
